Raymond’s aviation career began in the summer of 1989 in Bethel, Alaska, where he performed 100-hour inspections and annuals on light aircraft during the summer between his airframe and powerplant classes at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Washington. After college Raymond worked for Erickson’s Aircraft Upholstery at Felts Field, which led him to Tekoa, Washington where he worked for Harold Morgan. Raymond performed annuals, and major rebuilds on Cessna Piper and Beech aircraft at Harold’s shop. He also learned tremendously about rebuilding engines from Harold, one of the best piston engine rebuilders Raymond has known.
Raymond was offered the opportunity to work for Don Morse at Discount Aircraft Salvage, Deer Park, Washington in 2000. There he continued to perform major rebuilds, insurance work and aircraft recovery for upwards of 6 years.
In 2001, Raymond became involved in maintenance on Tanker 85, a PBY Catalina aerial firefighting aircraft, which began his involvement in aerial firefighting maintenance. In 2014 Aero Spray Inc., Appleton, Minnesota, offered Raymond a position as Maintenance Director. Raymond designed the company’s maintenance program and maintained their fleet of Fire Boss aircraft, which grew from four to thirteen during Raymond’s 5-year tenure.
Raymond opened his own shop, DEW North Aviation, in 2006. Additionally, that fall, Raymond accepted a position as Instructor of Aviation Maintenance at Spokane Community College in Spokane, Washington, along with maintaining twenty-five-plus aircraft at DEW North. Raymond has been full-time with his own company, DEW North Aviation in Deer Park, Washington, since 2019, performing annuals, modifications, and rebuilds on light aircraft, as well as assisting as maintenance support for several Fire Boss operators around the world. Raymond is also continually working on research and development for aerial firefighting aircraft modifications, with several projects working toward STC.
